In Z-CMS every content that is added to the program must be associated to a specific language. This feature allows an easy management of the multi-language function inside the different sites that can be stored in Z-CMS.

To allow the multi-language behaviour of websites, content must be made available in every language that the website supports. Z-CMS always store content in relation with a particular language. Hence for managing content of a website in Z-CMS, a language is mandatory.

Z-CMS has one default language that should be related to all contents. Other non-default languages can be created inside the program according to the user's needs.

Z-CMS manages languages on two levels, a first Superadmin level in which languages are defined, and a site level in which created languages are put in relation with the specific object. The Superadmin level is managed inside the Superadmin settings section, and defines what languages are stored inside Z-CMS. The object level is typical for each site and, thus, can be managed inside the Settings section of each site.

For what concerns advanced usage of the language functions, Z-CMS provides the Language Fallback and Syncing options.

Contents

Language Fallback

In Z-CMS, it is mandatory to store content data for attributes only in relation with the default language. All other languages are not mandatory. This may create differences in contents available in each language inside a multi-language site.

In these cases, when there are no content data available in the language opted by the website visitor, Z-CMS can substitute the missing case with the corresponding content stored in the default language.

To avail this feature, the particular non-default language must be “Fallback” enabled.

Fallback feature is always carried out per attribute and to the default language only. Further, content data of a particular attribute must be empty in order to avail “Fallback” to its corresponding content data in the default language. Inputting of content data for a particular attribute in a certain language will prevent “Fallback” from happening even if “Fallback” is enabled for the particular language.

Example: Language settings and fallback selection.

Consider that the multi-language behaviour of a site supports the following languages: ENGLISH, ITALIANO, FRANÇAIS, ESPAÑOL and PORTUGUES. Among them, ENGLISH is the default language and “Language Fallback” is enabled for FRANÇAIS as shown in the picture below.

Now, input content data for attributes of a Content Model in relation with all languages:

  • ENGLISH (default language)

  • ITALIANO

  • FRANÇAIS

The label Languages 11.png at the top right of the page indicates that Fallback is enabled for FRANÇAIS.

Consider that user is inputting content data only for the attribute “category” and decides to avail Fallback for the remaining two attributes: “name” and “price” by not inputting corresponding content data.

  • Save by clicking the button SAVE on top of the page.

The indication Languages 6.png appears next to the language name to recognize a Fallback active case during review or further editing of the content data set.

Now, for a quick preview of the Fallback feature availed for the two attributes: “name” and “price”, go to FRANÇAIS tab and click the button Languages 8.png next to Languages 11.png indicator at the top right.

By clicking again on the button Languages 9.png next to Languages 11.png indicator at the top right will turn off the preview mode.

Syncing

When Fallback is enabled for a language, Fallback mapping to the default language from the particular language will happen only for the contents stored after the selection of the language as fallback.

To extend the fallback feature also to earlier contents stored under one language, Z-CMS provides the “Synchronization” tool. In order to synchronize the language, the user should click the “Sync” icon Languages 12.png placed in the Settings section of the site.

Disabling Fallback for a particular language will erase the mapping completely from it to the default language. Language Fallback and Syncing can be realized both in the General as well as in the Site specific perspective.
